Egypt and Nubia: Volume III–No. 38, Mosque of Sultan Hassan from the Great Square of the Rameyleh
A grand Cairo monument in sunlight by David Roberts
Seen from the great square of the Rumeyleh, the mosque and madrasa of Sultan Hassan rises above Cairo like a cliff of stone. Built between 1356 and 1363 under the Mamluks, it was one of the largest religious buildings of its age, crowned by a dome and a soaring minaret.
