The Raampoortje in Amsterdam

Winter calm over Amsterdam’s old gate by Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk

Story

The little Raampoortje was once part of Amsterdam's city wall near the Bloemgracht. It led out to the bleaching fields, where dyed cloth was stretched to dry on wooden frames, or 'ramen', which gave the gate its name.
