Allen Edward Everitt

Artist

Allen Edward Everitt (1824–1882) was born in Newhall Street in Birmingham, the son of an art dealer and grandson of a local drawing master. He took lessons from David Cox, with whom he stayed friends, and specialised in old buildings and their interiors: timber-framed houses, halls, inns and churches across the Midlands, drawn with care and usually finished in watercolour. Because many of these buildings have since been demolished, his work is now a valuable record of Birmingham as it was in the mid-19th century. For more than twenty years he was honorary secretary of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Our two prints show the old Digbeth tripe house and houses at Kings Norton.
