Elizabeth Murray

Artist

Elizabeth Murray (1815–1882), born Elizabeth Heaphy, was the daughter of the English painter Thomas Heaphy and learned from him. As a young woman she travelled and worked as a portrait and landscape painter in Italy, Malta, Constantinople and Morocco, and after marrying the British consul Henry John Murray she lived for many years in the Canary Islands, which she painted extensively. She described her travels in the book Sixteen Years of an Artist's Life in Morocco, Spain and the Canary Islands (1859). In 1857 she was one of the founders of the Society of Female Artists in London, which gave women painters a place to exhibit. Our print, from the Art Institute of Chicago, is Victoria Castle and the Vale of Shanganagh, Dún Laoghaire (1843), a watercolour of the Irish coast near Dublin.
