Forest & Countryside

Collection

Woods, fields, farmhouses and country lanes: this collection shows the quieter side of landscape painting. Vincent van Gogh is here with The Harvest and Farmhouse in Provence, both painted near Arles in 1888. Closer to home, Johannes Warnardus Bilders painted the woods near Wolfheze, in the area around Oosterbeek that drew so many painters it became known as the Dutch Barbizon. Henri Rousseau's Rendezvous in the Forest, the watercolours Elijah Walton made of Rednal Wood near Birmingham and John Robert Cozens's Lake Nemi of 1779 take the walk further, from France and England to the hills south of Rome.
