Thomas Cole

Artist

Thomas Cole (1801–1848) was born in Bolton in Lancashire, grew up in the smoke of the Industrial Revolution and emigrated with his family to Ohio in 1818. In 1825 a sketching trip up the Hudson River produced landscapes that New York collectors bought at once, and Cole became the founder of the Hudson River School, the first American school of landscape painting. He settled in Catskill, New York, and painted the American wilderness as an untouched paradise, but also large allegorical series such as The Course of Empire and The Voyage of Life. Two long stays in Europe, including Italy, left their mark. We print his View of Florence from San Miniato (1837), from Cleveland, and New England Scenery (1839), from Chicago.
