Thomas Moran

Artist

Thomas Moran (1837–1926) was born in Bolton in Lancashire and emigrated with his family to Philadelphia as a child. Trained as an engraver and inspired by Turner, whose work he studied in London, he became the great painter of the American West. In 1871 he joined Ferdinand Hayden's government expedition to the Yellowstone region, and his watercolours and sketches helped persuade Congress to make Yellowstone the world's first national park in 1872. His huge canvases The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and The Chasm of the Colorado were bought by Congress. He also painted Yosemite, the Grand Canyon and Venice, and spent his last years in Santa Barbara, California. Our print is Zion Valley, from the canyon country of southern Utah.
