Art Prints

Flowers have been painted for science and for pleasure, and this group holds both. The 17th-century Dutch flower piece is at its core, with arrangements by Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Balthasar van der Ast, Jacob Marrel and Jan van Huysum that show tulips, roses and fritillaries in precise detail. Botanical plates add the scientific side, such as a study of a passion flower and a wild rose. From the 19th century come Claude Monet's Spring Flowers, Van Gogh's Irises, painted in May 1890 just before he left the asylum in Saint-Rémy, and the softly coloured vases of Odilon Redon. Flowers on paper also brighten a room when the garden is bare.
