Modern Masters

Famous Painters

Between the 1870s and the First World War painting changed more than in the three centuries before. The Impressionists broke up colour into quick strokes of light; Van Gogh, Cézanne and Toulouse-Lautrec made colour and line carry emotion and structure; and by 1911 Kandinsky had painted almost without subject at all. This group follows that path with Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and Renoir, Van Gogh's work from Arles and Saint-Rémy, Cézanne's Boy in a Red Vest, Paul Signac's harbour views, Modigliani's portraits and Kandinsky's Painting with Troika. These are the painters who still define what many people mean by modern art.
